U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently updated the I-9 form to make it more computer friendly, and to reduce user errors. Major changes to the form include:

  • Digital enhancements, including drop-down lists, digital calendars, and links to helpful instructions;
  • Additional accommodations for employees utilizing translators, including the ability to enter multiple preparers and translators, and an additional page for the preparer or translator;
  • A separate sheet of instructions, including specific directions for each field; and
  • Separate space reserved for additional information.

USCIS expects these changes to reduce mistakes in filling out the form. All employers must begin using the form by January 22, 2017. Access the new I-9 here: https://www.uscis.gov/i-9.
